What is a server

In the world of I.T., a server is a computer that provides access or data to other computers. It can deliver data to devices on a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN) through the internet.

There are many types of different servers that currently exist which include web servers, file servers, domain controllers, media servers and mail servers.   Each server runs software which is specific to the purpose of the server. A web server may run Microsoft IIS or Apache HTTP Server, which both allow access to websites through the internet. A mail server will run iMail, Exchange or Exim which allows SMTP services for sending and receiving email. A file server can utilize integrated software or third party software such as Samba to share resources over a network.

What software/hardware do I need?

Server software is specific to the type of server but the hardware is not as important. Regular desktop PC’s can be turned into a server by adding the correct software. This is not the best route to go because reliability comes into play in the work environment.

Most businesses use rack-mounted server hardware that are designed for 24/7 operation and allow top notch functionality. 4Leet can match you up with a server that will fit your budget and have the performance you want.

Even though server software can run on different computers it is important to take into account that the hardware needs to be robust enough to handle the demands of the server. Web servers need sufficient CPU power and memory especially if they are running scripts in real time. File servers need faster hard drives so data transfers to and from the server are quicker. Finally a fast network connection is required because all of this data flows through that connection.
